The Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) will develop the knowledge and skills needed
when working with children and young people in a residential childcare setting, including an
understanding of child and young person development.
The qualification enables the learner to gain essential skills and knowledge to support children and
young people in residential childcare settings, including: well-being and resilience, positive relationships and attachments, health and safety, sexual exploitation, communication, positive behaviour and positive outcomes
It also offers the learner the opportunity to cover optional topics which are particularly suited to specific residential childcare and respite care settings.
Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (England) serves as the required qualification under The
Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015.
Overall Programme Outcomes
On completion of this programme, learners can progress to become:
- Learners can progress onto the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England), or a Foundation Degree in a related discipline.
- residential childcare workers
- registered residential childcare managers, deputies and assistant managers (further professional development / qualification may be required once in post)
- managers, deputy and assistant managers in other adult or children and young people’s social care settings (further professional development/qualification may be required once in post).
Assessments
All units will be internally assessed using standard methods: coursework, portfolio of evidence, practical demonstration / assignment. This is a competency-based qualification and evidence is gathered by the learner as they undertake their normal work role. This will form the basis for their portfolio. The evidence must reflect policies and procedures of the workplace as stated by current government legislation. During the course of the qualification, the candidate should ideally work with at least two service users.
A range of assessment methods will be used by the assessor including examining work products and expert witness testimonies and direct observation. An assessor will visit you in the workplace at some point and undertake observations of you at work. This will be planned in advance in order to cause minimum disruption to your work routine and to try and capture as much information as possible in one visit.
Entry Requirements
- You should be at least 18 years old.
- Applicants may be admitted on evidence to show they are able to fulfill and benefit from the objectives of the programme and achieve the standards required.
- We do not set any other entry requirements but colleges or training providers may have their own guidelines.

Credits
Learners must achieve 61 credits. 53 credits must be achieved from Mandatory Group A. Learners must also complete a minimum of 3 optional units from Optional Group B, to achieve a minimum of 8 credits.
